WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Iowa health officials are warning residents to be mindful of bats.
Bat populations in Iowa are becoming more visible, as young bats begin to take flight and adults are preparing for migration. The Iowa Department of Public Health tells the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier (http://bit.ly/TB4lGH) that it is receiving more calls regarding rabies in bats.
So far this year, 12 rabid bats have been reported in the state. There have been no human rabies cases, and officials want to keep it that way.
Jon McNamee with the Black Hawk County Health Department says it's important for those exposed to bats to receive treatment to prevent rabies, if the bat can't be captured and quickly tested.
