GRANDMA'S GIFT - GIVING BIRTH TO GRANDDAUGHTER (FOLLOW UP STORY) - Emily and Mike Jordan once thought they would never have their own children. Emily had a radical hysterectomy two years ago after being diagnosed with cervical cancer. That's when her mother, Cindy Reutzel, stepped in. Cindy offered to carry the couple's baby and recently gave birth to a healthy baby girl, Elle Cynthia Jordan.

NIX THE TIKI BAR: HAWAII TOURISM GETS AUTHENTIC - Coconut bras aren't Hawaiian. Neither are grass skirts. Tiki bars? They're from California. Yet they're all among the most recognizable symbols of a Hawaiian vacation. CELEBRITIES PACK DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION - The DNC was filled with famous celebrities including the Foo Fighters, Eva Longoria, Scarlett Johansson and Mary J. Blige. Democrats are hoping that the excitement of the convention carries through election day.

FACT CHECK: OBAMA'S PHANTOM PEACE DIVIDEND - An AP fact check found President Obama using creative accounting, when he explained how money saved by not fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan could be used at home. AP also found Vice President Joe Biden selectively using numbers.

OBAMA CONCLUDES CONVENTION, ASKS FOR 2ND TERM - President Obama says the journey ahead won't be easy, but it will lead to a better place. The president's speech concluded the DNC Thursday night.

OBAMA TO VOTERS: 'YOU WERE THE CHANGE' - President Obama told supporters the 2008 presidential election wasn't about him, rather it was 'about you. My fellow citizens - you were the change.'

OBAMA: 'WE'RE MOVING FORWARD' ON ECONOMY - In accepting the Democratic nomination for president of the United States for a second term, Barack Obama said the path to a better economy is not quick or easy, but says 'we're moving forward.'

BIDEN: OBAMA HAS COURAGE TO MAKE TOUGH CALLS - Accepting his party's nomination for vice president, Joe Biden said Americans should re-elect President Obama, saying he knows there is more work to be done, but Obama has the courage to make the tough calls necessary to lead the nation.

DNC CHAIR: 'THIS ELECTION IS PERSONAL' - Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a breast cancer survivor, praised President Obama for passing health care reform and said this election is 'personal.'

GABBY GIFFORDS LEADS PLEDGE AT DNC - Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords led the crowd at the DNC in the Pledge of Allegiance. Giffords was shot in the head last year and has undergone extensive therapy. Her presence elicited a roar of approval from the delegates.

KENNEDY COMPARES ELECTION TO FATHER'S 1960 WIN - Caroline Kennedy says the re-election of President Obama is just as important to the future of the country as the 1960 election of her father, John F. Kennedy.

ACTRESS LONGORIA SPEAKS OUT FOR OBAMA - Actress Eva Longoria spoke at the DNC. She said she's supporting President Obama, saying she doesn't need a tax break now, like she did when she was a college student working at Wendy's.

IN SPEECH TO DNC, GRANHOLM REVS IT UP - Jennifer Granholm energized the delegates with a sharp-tongued speech about Obama's decision to bail out automakers General Motors and Chrysler and Romney's opposition to the plan.

REP. JOHN LEWIS: 'I DON'T WANT TO GO BACK' - The congressman from Georgia recalled his days as a 'freedom fighter' and urged voters to stand up for President Obama and to speak out against discrimination.

BIDEN CRIES AS SON NOMINATES HIM FOR VP - Joe Biden, the current vice president of the United States, was nominated to be the next vice president of the United States by his son, Beau.

President Obama is making multiple stops on the campaign trail today starting in New Hampshire, where he will be joined by First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill Biden. He then has a rally in Iowa, followed by an event in Florida this evening.

Romney-Ryan

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney starts the day with a rally in Iowa, followed by a rally in New Hampshire. Paul Ryan is campaigning in Nevada. Ann Romney is attending a 'Women for Mitt' rally in Virginia.

ECONOMY - The unemployment rate fell to 8.1 percent from 8.3 percent in July. The drop is attributed to the fact that people have given up looking for jobs. The AP sits down with Secretary of Labor, Hilda Solis, and talks to voters about how these numbers will affect their vote in November.

CLINTON - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton continues her six-nation Asia tour in Brunei where she is meeting with senior officials.

AMAZON UNVEILS NEW, LARGER KINDLE FIRE MODELS - Amazon announced four new Kindle Fire models on Thursday, a day after Nokia and Motorola unveiled five new smart phones between them. These announcements are coming before attention turns to a new iPhone from Apple next Wednesday.

LA, CATTLE STRANDED AFTER ISAAC - Stranded cattle are being wrangled and saved from Plaquemines Parish after the area was flooded during Hurricane Isaac.

NY, FAIREY RECEIVES SENTENCE FOR 'HOPE' POSTER - Shepard Fairey, the creator of the Barack Obama 'HOPE' poster, will learn his sentence today for criminal contempt after pleading guilty earlier this year to destroying documents and fabricating others in a civil lawsuit pertaining to The AP photograph he relied upon to make the poster. He faces up to six months in jail.

FL, BIG RESTAURANT CHAINS ACCUSED OF CHEATING SERVERS - A federal lawsuit, filed in Miami, says three major restaurant chains violate labor laws, short-changing servers. The lawsuit says as many as 100,000 employees at Red Lobster, Olive Garden and Longhorn restaurants may have been underpaid and accuses the Darden restaurant company of regularly evading federal wage and hour laws when it comes to servers.

UT, ATK TESTS NEW NOZZLE ON GEM-60 ROCKET - ATK, which has produced rockets for NASA's now shuttered space shuttle program and numerous other agencies, tested the GEM-60 rocket motor at its Promontory facility.

IL, AP REPORTER: 'NOT SURPRISED' BY PETERSON VERDICT - AP correspondent Don Babwin says he was not surprised by the jury's conviction of Drew Peterson in the murder of his third wife. The verdict was handed down Thursday in Joliet, Illinois.

DC, LADY GAGA DRESS 'MEATS' REAL WORLD - A traveling exhibit of famous women rockers includes a dress worn by Lady Gaga that was made entirely of beef. Preserving the dress in close to its originial form posed a challenge.

PRINCE HARRY IN AFGHANISTAN - Britain's Ministry of Defense says Prince Harry has returned to Afghanistan to fly Apache attack helicopters during a four-month tour of combat duty.

CHINA EARTHQUAKES - A series of earthquakes collapsed houses and triggered landslides in a remote mountainous part of southwestern China, killing at least 50 people with the toll expected to rise.

SYRIA - France's decision to send direct aid to Syria's opposition represents a break for the rebels after months of Western hesitation over fears that costly equipment intended for Syria's opposition could get lost or fall into the wrong hands.

JOHANSSON, LONGORIA SPEAK AT DNC - Hollywood stars Scarlett Johansson and Eva Longoria spoke at the DNC on Thursday night. They were part of a number of celebrities that attended the convention.

STEWART ON THE RED CARPET IN TORONTO - Kristen Stewart is back on the red carpet at the Toronto Film Festival to premiere her new film, 'On the Road.'

ONE DIRECTION, RIHANNA WIN BIG AT VMAS - The MTV Video Music Awards took place Thursday night, with One Direction and Rihanna walking away as the big winners.

'KATIE' MARKS NEW CHAPTER FOR COURIC AFTER CBS - Katie Couric talks about her new talk show 'Katie' premiering Monday, September 10.

GAMBLE ON NEW TAIWAN BEACH RESORT - Taiwan's former military outpost islands are gambling on a $2 billion makeover. The chain of islands on Taiwan's frontline is about to be turned into a luxury beach resort and casino after a U.S. bid was approved.

LEBANON SMOKING BAN - A smoking ban in all closed public spaces, including coffee shops, restaurants and bars in Lebanon has come in for sharp criticism. Many businesses say they are losing customers because of the no smoking law, which also imposes heavy fines on those who break the ban.

GERMAN EXHIBITION MARKS 200-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF MOSCOW BURNING - A major exhibition showing paintings and drawings by Germany's most famous architect, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, is opening in Berlin. The exhibition marks the 200-year anniversary of the burning of Moscow in 1812, an event depicted in one of Schinkel's most famous mechanical dioramas.
