CHICAGO (AP) — Cardinal Francis George has undergone his first chemotherapy treatment since cancer was found in his right kidney and liver.
The head of the Archdiocese of Chicago underwent his first chemotherapy session on Wednesday. The archdiocese has said treatments will last four months. It is George's second bout with cancer. Six years ago, surgeons removed his bladder, prostate and part of his right ureter following the discovery that he had bladder cancer.
The 75-year-old George is the spiritual leader of the Chicago archdiocese, which serves more than 2 million Roman Catholics. He has said he'll scale back his public schedule during the third week of each three-week treatment session.
George is being treated by doctors at Loyola University Medical Center and the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minn.
