CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — With Nathan Scheelhaase at the controls last Saturday, Illinois was cruising past Western Michigan 17-0. After he left with an ankle injury the defense had to save the Illini with a late touchdown of its own.

Illinois coach Tim Beckman says he won't know until Wednesday whether Scheelhaase will be able to play Saturday at Arizona State, and backup Reilly O'Toole says he's ready if needed.

The Illini (1-0) entered the season saying O'Toole would play on a regular basis but he was a rocky 2 of 3 for 7 yards Saturday and couldn't move the offense.

Arizona State (1-0) is coming off a season-opening 63-6 win over Northern Arizona. Illinois beat the Sun Devils at home last season, 17-14.
