Biden: All GM plants would have shut without help

Sunday September 2, 2012 12:30 PM

YORK, Pa. (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden says "all those GM plants would have been closed" had President Barack Obama not intervened to bail out the auto industry.

Biden campaigned Sunday in Pennsylvania. He says General Motors and other automakers "would have been liquidated" without Washington's help in 2009.

The vice president says Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are dishonest when they blame Obama and the Democrats for the struggling economy. Biden says Romney and his running mate would have preferred the automakers shut down.

Ryan has said a General Motors plant in his hometown of Janesville, Wis., closed on Obama's watch. Biden correctly notes the plant actually closed while President Bush was still president.
