TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida's top health official says only one more case of a virulent strain of tuberculosis has been found among homeless people in Jacksonville since efforts to identify potential victims were stepped up six weeks ago.
Florida Surgeon General John Armstrong also said on Friday that no other clusters of the strain have been found elsewhere in the state.
Health officials previously identified 16 homeless people suffering from the disease in Jacksonville this year.
Armstrong says 311others also have tested positive for latent TB infections, which are not contagious. He says that's 10 percent of about 3,000 homeless people tested in Jacksonville and that's consistent with the national average among the homeless.
Armstrong says all are being treated and offered assurances that residents of Jacksonville and visitors are safe.
