Detroit sewer workers find human body parts

Wednesday August 15, 2012 3:15 PM

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) — A crew working in a suburban Detroit sewer has discovered upward of a dozen human body parts in a sewer pipe 50 feet below a busy roadway.

Sterling Heights Police Lt. Luke Riley says contractors found the "small pieces" after shutting off two sewer lines Wednesday to drain water from the pipe so they could perform repairs.

Riley says one of the parts is tattooed and that the medical examiner is investigating the remains.

He says the parts likely weren't in the sewer for long and could have flowed down from northern Macomb or nearby Oakland County. The 21-mile-long sewer line runs south to the Detroit River.

The decapitated bodies of a man and a woman and other body parts were pulled from that river and a canal in July.
