CLE ELUM, Wash. (AP) — A state fire spokesman says a fast-moving wildfire has burned 40 homes in central Washington.

State Department of Natural Resources spokesman Mark Grassel says fire commanders estimate the blaze has burned at least 23 square miles since it started Monday afternoon east of the town of Cle Elum.

Fire officials say more homes are burning or under threat. So far, no injuries have been reported.

Grassel says the fire crept within about six miles of Ellensburg. Crews stopped its forward movement, although it is not contained.

The Kittitas County sheriff's office warned those in the fire's path to evacuate.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
