CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — BlueCross BlueShield has granted $3.9 million to extend an initiative to improve surgical care.

The money goes to the Tennessee Center for Patient Safety of the Tennessee Hospital Association and the Tennessee chapter of the American College of Surgeons.

Twenty-one hospitals across the state will use the funds. The partnership began in 2008 to evaluate and improve surgical care done by general and vascular surgeons.

The Journal of the American College of Surgeons has reported that the program has cut the rates of acute renal failure and surgical site infections.
