STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State's internal investigation into the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal is drawing to a close, and the findings could be released within weeks.
University trustees appointed former FBI Director Louis Freeh to lead the inquiry following Sandusky's arrest in November. Freeh has been tasked with finding out how and why Penn State failed to stop the former assistant football coach and with recommending changes to help prevent more abuse.
Investigators have also continued to look at broader issues, including the relationship between athletics and the administration, and the amount of influence the late coach Joe Paterno wielded at the school. Freeh's probe is also central to Penn State's efforts to cooperate with other inquiries in the Sandusky case.
Sandusky was convicted last month on 45 criminal counts.
