PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A group of tick experts will gather at the state Department of Health to discuss Lyme Disease, the tick-borne illness that infects tens of thousands of Americans annually.

Sen. Jack Reed on Monday will host experts from the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, the Rhode Island Department of Health and elsewhere to discuss the spread of Lyme disease and efforts to combat and treat it.

Experts have reported an increase in ticks this summer, and health officials warn that could mean a surge in cases of Lyme disease. Reed last year helped secure $28 million in federal money for tick-borne disease research and education.
