Tropical depression forms in the Pacific

Wednesday July 4, 2012 6:00 AM

MIAMI (AP) — A new tropical depression has formed over the Pacific but is not a threat to land.

The depression's maximum sustained winds early Wednesday are near 35 mph (55 kph). The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says gradual strengthening is expected and the depression could become a tropical storm later in the day.

The depression is centered about 470 miles (755 kilometers) south of Manzanillo, Mexico, and is moving west-northwest near 12 mph (19 kph). The depression's forecast track shows it going farther out to sea.
