MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Memphis police say the body of a child found in a large trash bin is a 3-year-old boy who had been missing for two days.

Police Director Toney Armstrong said Tuesday night that authorities have identified the body of Maurice Brown Jr., who was reported missing by his father on Sunday night.

The body was found more than a mile from where the boy had been staying with his father, Maurice Brown Sr.

The father told police he had fallen asleep for about 1 1/2 hours Sunday night, then awakened to find a door open and his son missing. Police launched an extensive search.

But a police affidavit says a witness reported seeing the man leave his apartment with a child's body draped over his shoulder. Maurice Brown Sr. was in custody after being charged Monday with child neglect or endangerment.
