TRENTON, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge is planning a dock for use by school groups and a public fishing pier in the Detroit suburb of Trenton.
It's part of a $2.8 million project at the Refuge Gateway, which is located next to the refuge's 410-acre Humbug Marsh unit. Officials are announcing Monday that Canadian railroad operator CN is contributing $200,000 for construction of the dock and pier at the former industrial site.
So far, $1.8 million has been raised. Organizers hope to raise $1 million more by year's end so construction may begin in 2013.
The Wayne County-owned Refuge Gateway also will house a visitor center. The refuge itself includes more than 5,700 acres along 48 miles of the lower Detroit River and western Lake Erie.
