BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The state's first doctoral program in nursing will be introduced at Idaho State University next spring.

The Pocatello-based university announced Wednesday the degree program will start in January, with six students admitted during the first semester. Classes will be offered through Idaho State's School of Nursing.

Trustees on the state Board of Education signed off on the Ph.D program at a meeting this month. The Idaho Statesman reports (http://bit.ly/KNCyAL ) the degree program is being approved amid a growing statewide demand for nurses with advanced degrees and nursing educators.

Idaho State University also has plans to offer a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree.
