KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Neighbors of a Kansas City woman charged with child abuse after her 10-year-old daughter was found locked in a closet say they're disgusted and shocked.

None of them knew the girl lived in the apartment until police responded to a child abuse hotline call on Friday.

The mother faces criminal charges, and her 8-year-old and 2-year-old daughters are in protective custody. The mother's boyfriend was questioned, but not charged.

Neighbors said they watched Friday as the 32-pound girl was carried to an ambulance wearing a dingy white shirt and no shoes. They said the two other children and were clean and happy.

Aishah (ih-EE'-shuh) Coppage lives next door to the woman charged. She said Sunday that she never heard banging on the walls or cries for help from the girl.
