MIAMI (AP) — A day after spending mere hours as a hurricane, Tropical Storm Chris is expected to weaken and fizzle out in the north Atlantic.

The storm's maximum sustained winds early Friday have decreased to near 50 mph (85 kph). The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says the tropical storm is expected to get weaker and become a post-tropical system later in the day.

Chris is centered about 435 miles (700 kilometers) east-southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland, and is moving northwest near 14 mph (22 kph).

The storm is not posing a threat to land.
