SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — The University of Notre Dame has received a $5 million gift from an alumnus for adult stem cell research.
The university on Friday announced the donation by Michael Gallagher and his wife. The university says it will fund three new endowed professorships in adult and all forms of non-embryonic stem cell research.
Some scientists say adult stem cells could help treat heart disease, diabetes, Parkinson's disease and some cancers. Gallagher, who lives near Denver, says he's confident research at Notre Dame will accelerate the discovery of new and successful treatments.
The Rev. John Jenkins, president of the university, says Notre Dame carries a mantle of responsibility to use its scholarship and resources to help alleviate human suffering with respect for the sanctity of all human life.
