Hearing asks how US Muslims are confronting extremism

Wednesday June 20, 2012 6:15 PM

WASHINGTON (AP) — The chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security says the U.S. faces a continuing threat from homegrown Islamic extremism.

Congressman Peter King's latest hearing asked what American Muslims are doing to confront radicalization.

Dr. Zuhdi (ZOO'-dee) Jasser, president of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, said efforts to deal with extremism are hindered by Muslim groups who deny there's a problem and consider the focus on Islam to be a sign of bigotry.

Some Democrats suggested the congressional hearings could feed American Muslims' distrust of government officials.

But Jasser and two Muslim women testified that Islamic extremism is a real problem that must be corrected from within the faith.
