Around the world, supporters of the environment mark Earth Day

People around the world have been celebrating Earth Day, which turned 42 this year.

Various events were held to celebrate the Earth's environment and spread awareness on how to conserve its natural resources.

In Montreal on Sunday, thousands of people marched downtown. In India, a group of schoolchildren walked through a countryside road while an Indian boy played in the polluted waters of the Yamuna River in New Delhi. Women wearing leaves and flowers were seen getting ready for a celebration in Barcelona. Three Taiwanese children dressed as local gods played a finger-guessing game while waiting to perform at the Earth Day celebrations in Taipei.

In Washington, people gathered on the National Mall refused to let their spirits be dampened by a steady rain.

But bad weather did force the cancellation of an Earth Day celebration at a park in Virginia Beach, Va.
