10TV spoke with a man who said he is a friend of Terry Smith Jr., the man police said raped at least two women he met online.

Tony Dunn said Terry Smith Jr., didn’t hide the fact he turned to the Internet to find a date. He said he frequented sites like OK Cupid, Plenty of Fish and Craigslist, looking for love and sex.

“I knew he was sleeping with them; it all seemed consensual. There was nothing out of the ordinary,” Dunn said.

Columbus police detectives said what Smith was doing was not consensual. Wednesday he appeared in court on two charges of rape and kidnapping.

He was arrested Tuesday at his Northeast Columbus home after a 21-year-old woman told police he raped her.

When officers arrested him, he was with another woman who also claimed she was raped.

Officers said Smith admitted he likes to use force with women, but Dunn never thought he would rape.

“It was always my understanding, the way he explained it, that if they said no, and that they really made it clear that was not something they wanted - that he would stop and take them home,” Dunn said.

Dunn said Smith sent a message to him on Facebook this past Sunday.

In part, the message reads, "I think something happened to me, man. I grew a conscience. And now, I feel horrible about everything I've done. I think I'm spent on being the punisher."

That guilt may have continued after his arrest - detectives said Smith admitted to assaulting several women over the last two years. They said he even provided them a list of six women he allegedly assaulted.

“It seems out of character for him to go out of his way to hurt somebody who has done nothing to him,” Dunn said.

Detectives said they believe Smith used his real name and address when conversing with women he met on the Internet. They said there could be more victims out there.
