UPDATED: Thursday July 17, 2014 8:59 AM

Police were connecting the dots at two crime scenes linked to a shooting in north Columbus.

Officers said shots were fired along 23rd and Cleveland Avenues around 3:00 Thursday morning.

38-year-old John W. Howell was shot twice in the upper body.

Police said friends of Howell's found him in an alley and tried to drive him to the hospital.

Officers caught up to the vehicle near 11th and Neil Avenues a short time later and conducted a traffic stop.

Medics took Howell to the hospital. He was expected to recover.

Police blocked off the area around Cleveland Avenue and were trying to identify the shooter.

Officers said they believed the shooting happened behind a Sunoco gas station, and that several shots hit a nearby home.
