A man is dead following a late night fire in rural Morrow County.
The fire occurred before midnight in the 5600 block of Wirick Road (Road 1), about 8 miles north of Fredericktown near the Morrow/Richland county line.
Kevin Carte, 47, died in the blaze. Family members jumped a fence in an attempt to save him.
Breanna Carte and Mikayla Thomas are Kevin’s nieces who lived in back of the building.
“I was just ‘Uncle Kevin, Uncle Kevin!’ Me and my dad went around back, and we went through all the weeds. And I helped my dad over the fence because he was going to the window, but the bed… it was done,” said Breanna Carte.
Multiple fire departments responded to the scene.
“The flames were really high, the house was completely burned,” said Mikayla. “He couldn't move very well. I was the last one to see him a few hours earlier.”
The structure was destroyed in the fire. Breanna and Mikayla are now left with a loss that is hard to explain.
“Really, he was my only biological uncle. And he could be crazy and he annoyed you sometimes, and he's the kind you loved, and it's really hard to take in that he's gone,” said Breanna.
Carte leaves behind his nieces, two daughters and grandchildren.
According to fire officials, crews were busy with two other blazes in Morrow County on Thursday night. A small attic fire and a fire at a trucking company also had to be extinguished. There were no injuries in those incidents.
