Prosecutors Say Multiple Murders, Shootings Linked To Short North Posse Members

UPDATED: Tuesday July 1, 2014 6:22 PM

Federal prosecutors have indicted 17 members or associates of the Short North Posse on charges including murder, attempted murder, robbery and extortion.

In a news conference on Tuesday, officials said that 11 of those named in the indictment are facing murder charges, making it the largest federal murder indictment in Ohio history. The 11 could face the death penalty if convicted.

The group was part of the gang known as the Short North Posse. The 17 accused referred to themselves as the "Cut Throat Committee" and "The Homicide Squad."

The indictments are the result of a joint investigation by members of the FBI, Columbus police and the Franklin County sheriff's and prosecutor's offices.

Investigators were looking into 15 murders that dated back until 1998. The U.S. attorney says he believes nine of those murders are now solved. The investigation also uncovered three more murders.

According to the indictments, members of the gang are tied to homicides in several communities including Columbus, Zanesville, Pickerington and Pataskala.

Fifteen of the alleged gang members named in the indictment are already behind bars for various crimes. Two suspects, Tysin Gordon and Ismael Bowers, are still at large.
