After 50 Years Of Letters, Pen Pals Meet In Person In Northeast Ohio

Two longtime pen pals have met face-to-face for the first time in a 50-year friendship that began when they were girls, long before cellphones and Facebook became commonplace.

Wendy Teeter of Staunton, Virginia, tells the Akron Beacon Journal she got teary Sunday when visiting Suzan LaMancusa's northeast Ohio home in Brimfield Township. After decades of exchanging letters about school, kids, divorces and other ups and downs, they finally shared one more thing: a hug.

Two friends had connected them as pen pals in 1964, when they were fourth-graders. Teeter was living in Islip, New York, and sent the first few letters, ending one with a plea for a reply.

LaMancusa says she was shy and unsure what to write. She finally responded, and it turned into a lifelong friendship.
