Northeast Ohio Funeral Director Gets 3 Years For Stealing $250K

A former funeral director in northeast Ohio who admitted stealing more than $250,000 from customers who prepaid for funeral arrangements has been sentenced to three years in prison.

A judge in Warren sentenced 52-year-old Robert McDermott Sr. on Wednesday. The former Niles funeral home director had pleaded guilty to 10 felony charges.

The (Youngstown) Vindicator reports several of McDermott's victims spoke in court, one of them calling him "lower than low."

Judge Ronald Rice said it appears that what McDermott did was "kind of like a Ponzi scheme," where money from new customers paid for the services to earlier customers. Prosecutors said he failed to put money for prepaid funeral arrangements into a trust account or insurance policy.

He'll have to pay restitution when he gets out of prison.
