U.S. Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio is planning to tour a Veterans Affairs clinic in Columbus and meet with area veterans.
The Republican will discuss a backlog of VA benefit claims and reports of fraudulent management of VA medical appointment records during Friday's visit to the Chalmers P. Wylie VA Ambulatory Care Center.
Portman also will discuss a bill he has sponsored to improve the way the military identifies and assesses mental health issues.
VA Secretary Eric Shinseki resigned last week amid a growing scandal over patient delays and allegations of falsified waiting lists at VA hospitals and clinics nationwide.
A federal investigation found broad problems throughout the veterans' health care system, which provides medical care to about 6.5 million veterans a year.
