Police have released new information about a 16-year-old boy accused of shooting and killing his 13-year-old best friend. They say a group of boys were passing around and playing with a handgun when the boy was shot and killed.
He is now charged with murder, even though he says it was an accident.
Court records show police believe 16-year-old Jakairion Spikes “purposefully shot the victim in the chest.” However, investigators tell 10TV that all of the eyewitnesses insist the shooting was an accident.
The mother of the 13-year-old victim Shaquez Brunner, told 10TV she's too devastated to talk about her son's death on camera. She says Shaquez and the boy accused of killing him were more like brothers than friends.
Police say the deadly shooting happened Tuesday just before 3 p.m. at the suspect's home on Oak Boulevard where four teens were passing around a gun.
10TV has learned neighbors told police they overheard a disagreement before they heard gunshots, but Spikes' mother says the boys never argued. "There (were) no problems. No arguments. They never fought, even if they had a bad moment, they never fought.”
She says she doesn't own a gun, but the victim's family is asking questions about a photo of Spikes posing with a weapon on a popular teen messaging app called Kik. The victim's mother wants to know if it's the gun used in the shooting and where the boys got it.
Police say even though the 16-year-old insists the shooting was an accident, they charged him with murder until prosecutors have a chance to review all of the evidence.
In the meantime, the families of both boys are struggling to understand what happened and what happens next.
