Suspect Shot By Police Turns Gun On Himself

Columbus Police are investigating a shooting involving an officer and an armed man in southeast Columbus.

The standoff between the man and SWAT officers started late Sunday morning.

Investigators say officers interrupted a home invasion near Travis Avenue in the Obetz area.  Police say they tracked the suspect to a neighborhood where they believed he lived near College Avenue and Petzinger Road near US-33.

Officers said they spotted the suspect in that neighborhood and chased him on foot.  Police say he was armed and was quickly spotted at a nearby pond.

A standoff with SWAT officers began and lasted several hours.  A confrontation happened around 2:00 p.m. as negotiators tried to get the suspect to surrender.

"I got a text from my roommate saying hey there'd been a gunman across the street, so just keep an eye out and on the lookout," said resident Matt Gore who lives just steps from where the suspect was surrounded by police.

Gore said he has never seen so much commotion in his quiet community.

"We had a cop car parked in front of our place we had, we had police tape all the way around this area all the way up the running path," he said.

As the chaos unfolded, residents were told to evacuate by Water's Edge Apartments management.

Honey Abramson was forced out of her home for hours.

"I got here at 12 p.m. and they said it would be two hours, came back they said another hour."

An officer eventually shot the suspect in the leg, that's when police say the suspect then shot himself in the head. He later died from his injuries. "

It's kind of unsettling to know that it's very close but the same point in time I still have faith this is a very good community," Gore said.

A CPD dispatcher says the suspect was taken to Grant Medical Center where he late died.  His identity is not being released until police have contacted the man's family.
