The Toledo zoo is seeking a surrogate mother and a new home for a baby orangutan rejected by its mother.

The zoo says the baby named Kecil was rejected after his birth on Jan. 11 and attempts to reintroduce him to his mother have failed.

Randi Meyerson, the zoo's assistant director of animal programs, tells The Blade for a story Friday that the baby's mother, Yasmin, had raised two other babies and the zoo was confident she would do so again.

The zoo is working with the Orangutan Species Survival Plan and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to place Kecil with a surrogate mother.

The baby has already been trained to take milk from a bottle given by keepers through training mesh.
