The Michigan Department of Agriculture has ordered Ohio Mulch to stop selling 12 different varieties of mulch.
The agency says it tested more than 200 bags of mulch from stores across the state with only 14 containing the declared net content and with the vast majority being quote,"grossly short."
A company spokesman told 10TV they stand by their products.
"We're a national company. We follow national standards set out by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the National Institute for Standards and Technology. We think that the Michigan Department is using a slightly different procedure for testing these materials than other states, " says Gene Pierce, Ohio Mulch spokesman
The company says it's cooperating with Michigan and is confident things will get resolved. In the meantime, the Ohio Attorney General says there are no complaints about Ohio Mulch on file.
However, the Ohio Department of Agriculture says they are investigating Ohio Mulch on a complaint. Results of that investigation are pending.
