A 16-year-old stowaway miraculously survived a trip across the Pacific, hidden in a plane's wheel well.
The runaway from Santa Clara, California had an argument with his family, then ran to the San Jose Airport. The boy hopped a fence and climbed into the wheel well of a plane, without knowing where where it was going.
The Hawaiian Airlines Boeing 767 jet departed shortly after 5:00 a.m. Hawaii time,a dn landed in Kahulu, Maui five hours later.
About an hour after the arrival, the FBI says a witness say the 16-year-old fall out of the wheel well.
Airport officials say airline personnel approached him and asked him what he was doing, but he wasn't very cooperative. The FBI believes the boy was unconscious for most of the flight, that reached altitudes of 38,000 feet and temperatures of 30 below zero.
An aviation expert says a person would pass out within a few minutes at that altitude and most people could breath with the low oxygen.
Authorities in Hawaii say the boy seems to medically be okay, but was disoriented and hungry when he was found. Medics took him to the Maui Memorial Medical Center to be checked out.
Police say they don't plan on charging the boy with anything.
