Mayor Michael Coleman won't say exactly what Republican National Committee officials told him when they cut Columbus off their list for potential convention cities, but he says he made it clear that he didn't agree with their reasoning.

"Columbus is capable and qualified and should have been in that final cut," Coleman told 10TVs Jim Heath. "I can tell you our numbers, if you compare the other cities, are actually better than some of the cities that made the cut."

Earlier this month, RNC officials called and interrupted a press conference that Coleman was attending with Governor John Kasich to give him the bad news that Columbus had not made the first round of cuts.

Cincinnati and Cleveland both made the GOP list and RNC officials have toured both cities this week.

"So what, you didn't get it?" said Coleman.  "It's just one of those things that you just have to keep going for it.  We'll never achieve until you stand on that base and keep swinging that bat.  Sometimes you strike out and sometimes you hit it.  The Democrats are next."

Democrats begin their convention selection search later this summer and Coleman says Columbus is preparing a bid.
