Woman Pleads Guilty in Hit-Skip Death, Taken Into Custody After Refusing Drug Test

The family of a young father killed last summer in a hit-and-run crash said they want the woman charged in his death to understand the hurt she caused.

20-year-old Jasmine Herring pleaded guilty in court Tuesday to charges of vehicular manslaughter, failure to stop after an accident and tampering with evidence.

Herring entered guilty pleas in court Tuesday, but the victim's family said Herring's actions speak louder than words, and that's why they don't believe she's sorry.

"He didn't deserve to die like that. He didn't deserve to be left in the middle of the road and die like that by himself," Hannah Smith said.

It's been more than nine months since Hannah Smith last saw her little brother Elijah.

The 21-year-old was hit and killed in July while riding his bicycle home from work along Woodland Avenue in East Columbus. He had only recently become a father.

"He was only two weeks when my brother died, and he didn't get a chance to do anything with his son, and my brother wanted to be a good dad to him." Smith said.

The person who police say hit and killed Elijah fled the scene.

Two months later, Jasmine Herring, was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, tampering with evidence and leaving the scene of an accident.

Smith said she doesn't believe Herring is remorseful.

Tuesday Herring pleaded guilty, prosecutors say she was taken into custody after refusing a drug test.  Prosecutors said she claimed she had marijuana in her system.

Hannah Smith said she wants the woman who killed her brother to stay behind bars, but more than that she wants her to realize what she did and the hurt she caused his family.

We did reach out to Herring, but she did not want to be interviewed.

The prosecutor is recommending Herring be sentenced to just under five years in prison. Herring is scheduled to be sentenced on May 29.
