Two families, including four children, were forced to escape as fire ripped through their homes early Tuesday morning.

The fire started around 4:00 a.m. on Hillgate Road in south Columbus.

The fire began on the outside of one of the houses in a carport. It spread to the roof and then to the neighbor's home.

More than a dozen fire engines rushed to the scene.

Firefighters made sure everyone got out safely and quickly put out the flames.

One of the families was able to return to their home.  The American Red Cross is helping the other family.
