Homes in southern Ross County and northern Pike County were being evacuated Tuesday afternoon due to smoke and flames from large brush fires.
At least four brush fires were reported, two in each county. Fire officials said about 35 acres were damaged.
Two of the fires were near George Hollow and Woods Hollow Roads, near Waverly.
Forestry officials burned land to use a firebreak to stop the spread of the flames.
Around a dozen homes were evacuated. Residents were allowed to return around 5 p.m.
At one point, fire officials say flames were shooting 20 feed high in 35 mile per hour winds.
Nine volunteer fire departments were battling the blaze.
No injuries were reported.
Crews were still on the scene because of the high potential of fire due to the conditions of the forest and the wind.
