Otterbein University Student Presumed Dead At Prairie Oaks Metro Park

UPDATED: Sunday March 16, 2014 1:13 PM

Franklin County Sheriff Zach Scott said a missing kayaker has been presumed dead Saturday night.

Water Rescue teams suspended the search for Kyle Miller, 21 at Prairie Oaks Metro Park on Saturday around 5:30 p.m. because of the depth of the water, strong winds and underwater currents.

Rescuers were called to the park on the west side of Columbus off of Amity Road around 11:15 a.m.

Metro Parks officials say a park ranger was notified that there were people in the water.

Two kayaks were reportedly seen overturned in the Darby Bend Lakes area.

Metro Parks spokesperson Peg Hanley said rescuers were able to get Austin Gifford, 19, out of the water.

He was sent to the hospital and has since been released.

An Otterbein University Spokesperson said Gifford and Miller were both students at Otterbein University and they were both from Hilliard.

Sheriff Scott said the two went in the water to rescue a dog.
