Five Columbus City Schools will close at the end of the school year.

The Columbus School Consolidation team suggested the Board of Education close Arlington Park Elementary, Brookhaven High School, Maybury Elementary School and Monroe Middle School. It also recommended closing Fifth Avenue K-6 Elementary but reopen in another building.

Board members voted unanimously to accept the team's recommendation Tuesday night.

"It's just really is a tough night for us all," said Brookhaven teacher Carla Hegyi.

The audience listened intently as the district's board of education discussed the recommendations and many say they were encouraged by their questions, .

But, after much debate, the board voted unanimously to accept the recommendation.

The decision devastated many in the room.

"We intend to go on with business as usual and talk about Othello but I think that there will come a time in the classroom where we will have to stop and we will have to talk and will have to love one another through this and talk about the future," said Hegyi.

A future, one Brookhaven students says, she is not ready to face.

"I'm not ready because I am just a freshman at Brookhaven and I feel so in love with that school and it breaks my heart because I really wanted to graduate from Brookhaven," said freshman Maria Gaitan.

The school board was considering closing two other schools, but on Monday said Independence High School and Siebert Elementary School should remain open.
