UPDATED: Monday March 3, 2014 5:20 PM

The Columbus School Consolidation team is making its final recommendations on school closures.

The preliminary list of seven schools has now been reduced to five.

The group now says that Independence High School and Siebert Elementary School should remain open.

Arlington Park Elementary, Brookhaven High School, Maybury Elementary School, and Monroe Middle School are all recommended to close. Fifth Avenue K-6 Elementary is recommended to be closed but reopen in another building.

A vocal group of parents, students, and alumni had been pushing for Independence High School to stay open.

All of the recommendations from the committee are now sent to the Superintendent and the Board of Education to be finalized.
