Worried Parents Address Columbus City Schools Board About Possible Closures

UPDATED: Tuesday February 25, 2014 11:34 PM

Columbus City Schools' board members will decide next week whether the district should close seven schools this summer.

The school board is considering closing Brookhaven and Independence High Schools, Monroe Middle School, Arlington Park Elementary, Fifth Avenue Alternative Elementary, Maybury Elementary, and Siebert Elementary.

Tuesday night, students, parents and school employees shared their thoughts on the possible closings during a meeting at East High School.

"If we lose out on our school, what are we to do?" asked parent Rebecca Taylor. "So, I'm here fighting for our school because I feel like it's the right thing to do."

The recommendation to close the seven schools follows the failure of the November operating levy and bond issue which forced the district to reduce its expenses by about $50 million dollars by July 1st.

The school board will vote on March 4 on a board committee's recommendation to keep the schools open or close them.
