Three cats died after a fire at an animal shelter in north-central Ohio.

A shelter employee called authorities just before 6:30 p.m. Friday to report the fire in the basement of Stop The Overpopulation of Pets shelter in Mansfield.

Eight cats were unaccounted for Friday night.

The Mansfield News Journal reports 36 cats pulled from the home were taken to Hull Veterinary Hospital for the night.

The Journal reports the animal shelter is run by Diana Nolen. The Journal said the shelter is a haven for injured and abandoned cats. Nolen has helped find more than 1,000 cats a safe home.
