President Obama Expanding Higher Education Access

UPDATED: Thursday January 16, 2014 6:18 AM

President Barack Obama is bringing together leaders from more than 100 colleges and universities to announce steps each will take to expand access to higher education.

The leaders will convene at the White House Thursday along with representatives from 40 other groups that are also pitching in.

Last year Obama asked universities to commit to take action in one of four areas.

Some schools are helping low-income students connect with colleges and ensure they graduate. Others are reaching out to elementary, middle and high school students. Some are boosting college advising and entrance exam preparation. And other schools are improving remedial programs so underprepared students can still succeed.

The event is part of Obama's efforts to circumvent Congress in his second term by spurring action that doesn't require legislation.
