The Fairfield County Sheriff's Office is charging a man with theft after a person he was with was killed in a hit and run.
Tyler Paul, 22, is facing charges of breaking and entering, theft, and possession of criminal tools. Paul was found on Lithopolis Road during an investigation into a fatal hit and run.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol says 24-year-old Josh Barns was killed by a vehicle around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday morning on Lithopolis Road.
Investigators now say that they believe Paul and Barns were breaking into vehicles in the area.
Barns' family told 10TV that he was walking from a house after his ride did not show up. He was walking with another person, looking for a pay phone. Deputies now say that other person was Tyler Paul.
Deputies said the driver of the vehicle that struck Barns did not stop at the scene. Paul was not hurt.
The white 2007 Jeep that hit the victim is missing a mirror and has a cracked front bumper. A Groveport officer located what is believed to be that vehicle in a commercial parking lot on Greene Point Drive.
Barns was a 2009 graduate of Groveport Madison High School.
Relatives of the victim said Barns had a big heart and loved children. They hope the driver turns himself in.
