UPDATED: Tuesday October 29, 2013 6:29 PM

The Fayette County Sheriff says a deputy resigned on Tuesday, a day after an inmate escaped.

Deputy Shannon Plummer handed in her resignation Tuesday morning, according to Sheriff Vernon Stanforth.

On Monday, inmate David Payne escaped custody while at the Fayette County Memorial Hospital for a medical procedure.

Payne stole a vehicle and crashed while being chased by authorities. Payne died in that crash.

According to Stanforth, Payne was involved in a scuffle at the jail earlier on Monday and got a key that Deputy Plummer dropped.

Payne then unlocked himself and overpowered a deputy at the hospital.
