Police say a woman was shot and killed by officers in northwest Columbus Friday morning.
Julie Caudill, 43, was killed in the shooting which occurred on Ponset Street around 10:45 a.m.
According to officers, she was threatening to commit "suicide by police" before the incident.
Caudill’s husband had called police from out of town to ask for a well-being check.
Neighbors reported seeing the woman in her yard, bleeding with cuts to her wrists.
When police arrived, they say Caudill opened the front door, holding a handgun.
A veteran police sergeant fired multiple rounds, hitting the woman in the chest.
The sergeant that pulled the trigger is now on leave during the investigation.
“This is a very difficult time, not only for the family members, but for the officer that pulled the trigger. We're used to situations where we have to deal with violent bad people, and in this case someone was struggling for help," said Sgt. Rich Weiner.
Columbus Police tell us the woman has a history of harming herself and had threatened to commit suicide by police in the past.
