Ohio Honor Flight To Head For DC Despite Shutdown

UPDATED: Tuesday October 8, 2013 8:48 AM

A program that takes military veterans to Washington to view war memorials plans to go ahead with a Wednesday trip from northwest Ohio even though monuments and parks in the nation's capital are closed because of the government shutdown.

The Blade in Toledo reports organizers with Honor Flight Northwest Ohio say they don't want to let politics jeopardize the trips. The Wednesday's trip was slated to include about 70 veterans and their escorts.

National Park Service sites are closed because of the budget impasse, but veterans groups that planned trips to the World War II Memorial on the National Mall have been granted access despite the shutdown.

It became a political symbol in the bitter fight between Republicans and Democrats over the shutdown and who's to blame.
