A former security guard and another man are suspected of stealing three pieces of rare Formica furniture from the suburban Cincinnati office of the century-old company known for its plastic laminate countertops and cabinets.

Two chairs and a bench with a total value of $73,000 disappeared from Formica's Evendale office over the summer. An auctioneer says he agreed to pay $7,500 for the three unusual pieces before he heard about the theft and contacted police.

A Formica spokeswoman tells The Cincinnati Enquirer the pieces originally commissioned for a Cincinnati arts center are considered art and had been on display in a private part of the office.

Police say one of the chairs was destroyed.

Two Springfield Township men have pleaded not guilty to theft charges in the case.
