As America was remembering 12 years in Afghanistan, four service members were killed in a raid near where a central Ohio naval officer is based.
Chief Petty Officer Brian Johnson is on his second deployment to Afghanistan.
Johnson is assigned to help reconstruct the territory of Kandahar, a place that shows no signs of slowing down despite a drawdown in foreign forces.
Tuesday is Johnson's birthday.
"I spent my entire day in an airport," he told his daughter Amber through an Internet video conversation.
“Well, when you come home, we’ll have a special birthday party for you, Dad,” said his daughter Amber.
Johnson’s wife, Melissa, says filling in for dad is something she's no stranger to but she admits it can sometimes be a hard balancing act.
"We all have our days when you don't want to get up. I want to stay in bed all day," Melissa said.
Her husband won't be home until the spring, so for now, they'll have to celebrate his birthday thousands of miles apart.
"Alright, well, I love you," Melissa told her husband. "Happy birthday.”
This is Chief Petty Officer Johnson's seventh deployment overseas.
He is currently deployed with more than 100 Navy reservists out of Rickenbacker and attached to the 28th Infantry in Louisiana.
