An online effort to keep a local police department from shutting down has been launched.
The Jacksonville Police Department will be disbanded Sept. 30 because of financial issues, according to the mayor.
Mayor Jay Chapman said that the 500-person village was $166,000 in the red on the general fund, and the police department is paid for out of the general fund.
Emergency calls will be handled by the Athens County Sheriff's Office after the department is closed.
The police chief's wife launched a funding effort to keep the department running.
The mayor said they may try for a levy next year to bring back the department.
