Suspect Shot During Robbery

UPDATED: Saturday September 21, 2013 7:57 AM

A man is recovering from a gunshot wound and is facing charges after a north Columbus store robbery.

Police say Richard West entered the Circle Mart in the 1800 block of Tamarack Circle South around 8:45 p.m. Friday.

Authorities say West assaulted two clerks inside the business and told them he had a gun.

Officers say one of the clerks grabbed a gun from behind the counter during the confrontation and told West to leave.

Police say West refused to leave the store and rushed at the clerk.  The clerk then reportedly shot West in the leg.

Authorities say West continued to act erratically, walking in and out of the store and reached across the counter in an attempt to steal a jar of Chapstick containers.

Once West left, police arrested him near the store.

Officers say he claimed to be a victim of an unprovoked shooting.

Medics took West to the hospital, where he is expected to recover.

West is charged with Aggravated Robbery.
